It’s been 5 months now, and as of yet I haven’t written about my biggest adventure so far… fatherhood. The poignant and heartfelt things you see in the movies are all there, except they’re not wrapped in a montage of beautiful music and Hallmark moments. The first time that kid smiles at you may be just after his first reenactment of the Hiroshima bombing in his diaper, or after he just peed in your face, but it totally makes up for it. Those bleak nights, spent standing up in the dark rocking back and forth trying not to lose consciousness - when that is the one thing you so desperately want to do, are in no way touching. But the sun rises, you open your eyes to see this little person that terrorized you all night, and you can’t help but smile. What you really see is yourself… as you once were… innocent and breathing the breaths of peaceful dreams.
“Through this feeling of helplessness suddenly burst a piercing nostalgia for the lost world of childhood. The way it came right up against the heart, that world, and against the face. No indoors or outdoors, only everything touching us, and the grown-ups lumbering past overhead like constellations.” ― Denis Johnson
This is the undefined, obscure thing that no one can quite articulate and that always annoyed you about people with kids - their obsession with their spawn does not always come from a sappy caramel-like center that oozes schmaltz for little kids and their cuteness. It is something deeper, that can’t be explained, exists somewhere in your guts, and allows you to re-connect with your own mortality. Sometimes it aches, sometimes it makes you panic, and sometimes… after a hellish night of crying that brought you to the brink of your sanity… it allows you to wake up excited to share the morning with your little sidekick.
So, for my 3 followers, I’ll try to keep the oozing to a minimum (confined mostly to pictures) and do my best not to turn out like this guy … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KVHXmu2rNc&feature=related
